Ukraine's government is applying to get the port city of Odesa onto the UN's World Heritage List of protected sites.

Its historic centre, renowned for its architecture, has already been "affected by bombardments" and is "located only a few tens of kilometres from the front line" with the Russian army, according to Unesco.

The area blossomed after empress Catherine the Great decreed in the late 18th century that it would be Russia's modern gateway to the Black Sea.

Now analysts say Russian President Vladimir Putin could soon target Odesa to completely block Ukraine's Black Sea access, potentially with heavy bombardments like those that razed the port of Mariupol, AFP news agency says.

In late July, the city was struck by missiles just hours after Russia agreed to allow a shipment of Ukrainian grain exports from the port.

Windows and a canopy of the Museum of Fine Arts were destroyed, Unesco said. It's director Audrey Azoulay met Ukraine's Culture Minister Oleksandr Tkachenko in Paris on Tuesday.

Unesco said its experts already on the ground would provide technical assistance so Odesa can be added to lists of heritage sites under threat.

The Saint-Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv and the historic centre of Lviv - already recognised as Unesco sites - could also go on to the endangered list, to help protect them.
